Chicago poet and singer Jamila Woods, made a name for herself with a soulful verse she contributed to Chance the Rapper‘s “Sunday Candy” last year, released her video for “Blk Girl Soldier,” the first single to her anticipated debut solo album, Heaven, out June 23. This is a very empowering track celebrating womanhood and important black woman who had a difference in African American culture. In the video she made reference to Rosa Parks, Assata Shakur and Harriet Tubman in the song’s lyrics. In a interview with Complex Media Woods stated, “I wanted to celebrate the power and resilience of black women but also highlight the importance of allowing space for more quiet, vulnerable moments where we can refuel ourselves and each other,”. “The goal of the ‘Blk Girl Soldier’ video is to lift up the black women throughout history and today who inspire me and who are doing brilliant artistic and activist work. Knowing my history and what my people have survived before me has made me stronger.” Woods has made other musical contributions with Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment‘s “Sunday Candy” from Surf; and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ “White Privilege II.” Her anticipated debut solo album, Heaven, out June 23.
