Source CBS Billie Eilish Accuses Rappers of Misrepresenting Themselves In Music 5 time Grammy winner Billie Eilish had a big year with her breakout debut album debut studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? to become a household name. Recently she got under some rappers skin with comments about hip hop song writing. Eilish is featured on the cover of the March 2020 Vogue issue, along with an interview commenting on the stories hip hop artists rap about. Eilish notes that many artists she admires—Lana Del Rey; Tyler, the Creator; Marina and the Diamonds; Aurora—have created dark alter egos in their songwriting. “Just because the story isn’t real doesn’t mean it can’t be important,” she explains. “There’s a difference between lying in a song and writing a story. There are tons of songs where people are just lying. There’s a lot of that in rap right now, from people that I know who rap. It’s like, ‘I got my AK-47, and I’m fuckin’ . . .’ and I’m like, what? You don’t have a gun. ‘And all my bitches. . . .’ I’m like, which bitches? That’s posturing, and that’s not what I’m doing.” Billie herself enjoys developing characters and writing from the perspective of those characters. Of course in true fashion social media responded not taking her comments to kindly. White artist has used hip hop-influenced music to become famous and takes the aesthetic of hip hop to become a fashion icon. Genius points out Eilish’s affiliation with rap goes back to the roots of her career. She’s collaborated with Denzel Curry, counted the late XXXTentacion as a friend, and previously cited rappers like Childish Gambino, Isaiah Rashad, and JID as major influences on her music.
