It has been 18 long years since the iconic hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest released an album. The last album together was “The Love Movement” in 1998. Today ends the long awaited uncertainty with the release of Tribe’s final album We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service.
Tribe assembled plenty of guest features ranging from Kanye West, Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, Talib Kweli, Anderson .Paak, and more. The new album also features all four of the group’s original members, Jairobi White, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Q-Tip, including the late Phife Dawg.
The sound will sound familiar to Tribe fans, as they did not stray to far from the elements that made them a household name. ATCQ was known for their blending of jazz samples and funk. This sound is what help define the group. The smooth jazz samples are still prevalent and lyrical word play between Phife and Tip is as dynamic as ever.
Their sound is more updated, but still authentic.
Q-Tip stated, “We spoke at length about the importance of maintaining the essence but not getting trapped in that and just trying to see it beyond,” Q-Tip said.
The first Tribe release in 18 years will be the group’s last, especially with the passing of Phife Dawg’s signature sound and metaphors.
“We obviously suffered a great loss with Phife,” said Consequence, Q-Tip’s cousin and a frequent Tribe collaborator since the mid-1990s. “We had to look each other in the eye and see each other’s mortality and understand that we’re here with a purpose and we’re a family.”
The group will be performing from the new record on this week’s Saturday Night Live, with friend and first-time host Dave Chappelle.
