Legendary producer DJ Premier released a new Gang Starr album One of the Best Yet This is first official release in 16 years since The Ownerz in 2003. Premier included veteran 90’s rappers that rolled with Gang Starr back in the day Group Home, M.O.P., Freddie Foxx, Jeru The Damaja. The album also features verses from J. Cole, Ne-yo, Q-Tip and more. The other half of Gangstarr the late rapper Guru’s son Keith Casim Elammake an appearance on a interlude.
According to an article in the New York Times, DJ Premier constructed the album using isolated vocals DJ Solar was holding on to. As you may this way a well publicized beef between the two. DJ Premier is the original member and co-founder of Gang Starr. Solar, a Brooklyn native who worked with the Guru from 2000 until Guru’s untimely passing in 2010 from terminal cancer. While Guru was sick Premier claimed allegations of abuse, isolation from Guru’s family and the claim of hijacking the Gang Starr brand by coercion from DJ Solar. (Although Premier and Solar were not on speaking terms, the two were able to work out a deal; even though, now, Solar says he believes he deserves production credit and wants to be added to the album’s credits.)
The 16 track album took 18 months to construct. To fans surprise we really did not think there would be anymore Gang Starr albums due to the controversy. To fans delight it is great to see one of the most influential rap groups drop a album. Gang Starr and J. Cole dropped a n new single and video for “Family and Loyalty” about a month ago. This is a signature Gang Starr album with hard hitting lyrics and beats
