Circuit Judge Clifton Newman declared the case of MicahelSlager,who fatally shot Walter Scott in Charleston,S.C. a mistrial. Judge Newman gave this statement to the court “The court therefore must declare a mistrial in this case and I so declare that this case is mistried,”
The jury of 12 could not reach an unanmious decision in the case because one juror did not want to convict Slager. One of jurors told the court this “We as the jury regret to inform the court” that they were unable to come “to a unanimous decision in the case of the state versus Michael Slager,
The trial lasted for 5 weeks, Michael Slager shot Walter Scott multiple times in the back, Mr.Walter Scott was initially pulled over for a traffic violation, but he fled from his vehicle and former Officer Slager chased him down.
However Michael Slager still faces charges in federal court for
violating civil rights laws; obstruction of justice; and using a firearm while committing an act of violence.
