Michael Bloomberg Attempts To Secure Black Votes With Half Ass Apology For Stop and Frisk Policy

Former New York City Mayor and current presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg apologized for the racist stop and frisk policy he instituted during his term as Mayor yesterday talking to a black church congregation.  Bloomberg was a stark supporter of the policy that allowed the NYPD to disproportionately target and terrorize black and brown citizens.  Yesterday Bloomberg visited the Christian Cultural Center, a black megachurch in Brooklyn and stated,

“I didn’t understand that back then the full impact that stops were having on the black and Latino communities. I was totally focused on saving lives, but as we know, good intentions aren’t good enough. Now, hindsight is 20/20. But, as crime continued to come down as we reduced stops, and as it continued to come down during the next administration, to its credit, I now see that we could and should have acted sooner and acted faster to cut the stops. I wish we had. I’m sorry that we didn’t. ”

The timing of his apology is very questionable considering his potential bid for the presidential Democratic nomination.  It seems he is trying to secure black votes to strengthen his profile.  I am not buying Bloomberg not knowing the impact stop and frisk would have.  People of color have complained and filed lawsuits for racial profiling n the New York City and New Jersey area for decades.  It wasn’t until 2006 hard data was recorded  when the City Council passed laws requiring it about obsessive stops.   Data proves people of color were stopped far more than whites.  An analysis by the NYCLU revealed that innocent New Yorkers have been subjected to police stops and street interrogations more than 5 million times since 2002, and that Black and Latino communities.  Nearly nine out of 10 stopped-and-frisked New Yorkers have been completely innocent.

Bloomberg has been out of office for six years and has not utter one word of an apology until it was convenient for him.  Current NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio shared a similar sentiment.

“To wait six whole years and only when it is a matter of need, I think that raises eyebrows. This is a deathbed conversion.”

Bloomberg know he needs to black community and to offer a half ass apology is downright shameful.
