Future To Co-Produce The Superfly Remake & Soundtrack

Trevor Jackson to portray Youngblood Priest in Remake

Atlanta rapper Future has signed on to co-produce the cult classic film Superfly and also curate the film’s soundtrack as well. Famed music video director X took to social media to make the announcement of him directing the 1972 remake. Future will join Joel Silver as one of the producers, Silver is most notably known for is work in the Matrix triology and Lethal Weapon.

Actor Jason Mitchell, who portrayed Easy-E in the Straight Outta Compton biopic and is currently on the new Starz show The Chi has been casted to the Superfly remake. Trevor Jackson a newcomer to Hollywood and is currently on the Black-ish spinoff Grown-ish has been cast as Youngblood Priest the lead character in the film.

X said to Deadline “When I went back and watched the original, I was struck by how relevant the themes are,” he also said “The pursuit of the American Dream is eternal — everyone’s always on the hustle, because you’ve got to be… andSuperflyis about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game. Our goal is to make it modern — to make a movie where the style, the art direction, the camera movements are all part of what makes the movieSuperfly. With this film, my goal is to honor the lineage of an iconic title that the community has loved for decades.”

Superfly was a blaxplotation film that was originally directed by Gordon Parks and starred Ron O’Neal as Youngblood Priest. However the film was most known for its soundtrack that was written and produced by the late great soul singer and musician Curtis Mayfield. The original film produced two sequels Superfly T.N.T in 1973 and The Return of Superfly in 1990.

There is no word on a release date on the Superfly remake and whether or not Future will have his music featured on the soundtrack.
