African Americans Win Big At SAG Awards 2017

One year after the hashtag #Oscarssowhite drew criticism about the lack of diversity in the nominations, Hollywood took notice. Even though it is not the Oscars African American actors and actresses won big at last nights SAG Awards 2017.

Mahershala Ali, won supporting actor for Moonlight. He has made a name for himself in the industry the last few years. Mahershala starred in the Netflix original series House of Cards and Netflix original series Luke Cage as archrival character Cottonmouth. He also delivered a moving speech about acceptance.

Denzel Washington won Outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role in the Motion Picture Category for the movie “Fences”.

Viola Davis won Outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role in the Motion Picture Category for the movie “Fences”.

Hidden Figures won Outstanding performance by a cast in a theatrical motion picture, which Tarji P. Henson starred in.

The SAG Awards 2017 did get political. Amid protests nationwide over President Trump’s immigration ban, impassioned stars spoke out against the executive order Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
