Hit-Boy is in full beast mode and is not letting up anytime soon. The Grammy award-winning rapper-producer continues his streak of success with the release of Surf or Drown album. This is his follow up solo project to the 2020 release of The Chauncey Hollis Project.
The 21-track project features amazing guest appearances from the likes of Nas on “The Tide,” Jay 305 on “State Champ,” Dom Kennedy on two tracks including “CORSA,” Curren$y on “Tony Fontana III,” The Alchemist on “Slipping Into Darkness” and more.
SURF OR DROWN also arrives with the instrumental of all the songs, with Hit-Boy tweeting, “Surf or Drown is a Rap / Instrumental album. If yall make songs to the beats send em over.” He continued, “#idothisfortheculture and this is just Vol.1.”
Hit-Boy shared more details about the forthcoming album during a Twitter Spaces interview with TIDAL’s Elliott Wilson on Thursday (March 16).
Some of the vibes on there I feel like people are gonna rock with. It’s not all soul chops and shit; it’s modern sounds, it’s everything. It’s a world to come into,” he explained.
“In different interviews and stuff I’ve been doing, I’ve been talking about how I went through some real stuff and I had to really figure out my place back in the game and just understand my personal power in this shit.”
“I could’ve drowned in this shit, so it’s like, Surf or Drown. You already know, Surf Club, that shit go way back,” he added of his long-running record label, while promising “something special” on the album”.
