Viola Davis Becomes The Fourth Black Person To Earn EGOT Status Actress Viola Davis became the 18th person to earn the rare EGOT status and the third Black woman in history to achieve the honor. Davis won the Grammy Award on Sunday for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for narrating her audiobook Finding Me: A Memoir. “It has just been such a journey," Davis said in accepting the award. "I just EGOT!” “Oh, my God." "I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola, to honor her, to honor her life, her joy, her trauma, her everything.” EGOT is stands for those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Davis is the fourth Black person, alongside Whoopi Goldberg, John Legend and Jennifer Hudson. Viola Davis won her first Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Play in 2001 for King Hedley II, and a Best Leading Actress in a Play in 2010 for Fences. In 2015, she made history as the first Black woman to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the Emmy Awards for How to Get Away With Murder. She reprised her role in Fences for the film, opposite her Broadway costar Denzel Washington , winning the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award in 2017,
