Detroit is known for the soulful music rightfully so because it is the birthplace of Motown Records and also the home of legendary artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and J Dilla to name a few. DJ’s are known to mashup artist from different genres to give music lovers a different perspective of their music such as 9th Wonder & Nas, Ghostface & MF Doom, and Jay-Z & The Beatles.

Gaye helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, first as an in-house session player and later as a solo artist with a string of hits, including “Ain’t That Peculiar“, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine“, and duet recordings with Mary WellsKim WestonDiana Ross and Tammi Terrell, later earning the titles “Prince of Motown” and “Prince of Soul”.

Jay Dee later changed his name to J Dilla was one-third of the Hip Hop group Slum Village and was also known for production for such artists including A Tribe Called QuestDe La SoulBusta RhymesErykah BaduThe RootsThe Pharcyde and Common.

Marivn Gaye died on April 1,1984 by a gunshot to the chest by his father Marvin Gaye Sr. and J Dilla succumbed to his battle with lupus in winter of 2006. Both were and still highly regarded as geniuses in the music industry, so checkout their catalog and this mashup by D Begun
