Editorial: Should You Boycott The BET Awards For Not Airing The Million Man March

by Raheem Karim

Hip-hop was created in the late 70’s out of the Bronx New York as party music and to bring awareness of social injustices. This is African Americans version of CNN. The 20th Anniversary of Million March was in Washington, DC this past weekend. The purpose of the march is to bring black men together and talk about we can be positive influences in our community.

Now let us remember before BET was sold to Viacom, Hip-hop was the main attraction for viewers on BET. Also their was a variety of hip-hop music played such as socially conscious, gangster, party. Not anymore. The way blacks portrayed is so slanted and negative now that Viacom has taken over is ridiculous. You play our music, air realty shows where we make a monkey out of ourselves, but you do not air a event that is uplifting to all.

BET (Black Entertainment Television) has faced heavy criticism for not airing the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March on Saturday. The march was organized to show solidarity among African-Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans in demanding equal justice under the law for all Americans.

As the name of the rally – “Justice Or Else” – was one of the top trending topics on Twitter throughout the day, users of the social media app continuously blasted BET. Some people have even called for a boycott of the Hip Hop Awards show’s broadcast in protest.

Other major media outlets aired the march and they do not play Hip-Hop Music
