With the untimely death of music legend Prince, the tributes are pouring in for “The Purple One”. Prince’s catalog spans over 3 decades and of his style transcendent music. Prince was a true musician that was self taught, for his first string of albums he played all of the instruments, composed, arranged and wrote majority of the songs.
Born in Minneapolis, the 57-year-old musician released his debut album For You in 1978. His 1979 album Prince went platinum due to the success of the singles “Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover”. His next three records—Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982)—continued his success, showcasing Prince’s trademark of prominently sexual lyrics and incorporation of elements of funk, dance, and rock music. His 1984 album Purple Rain is what really shot him to superstar status. The album sold more than 13 million copies in the US and spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The film of the same name won an Academy Award and grossed more than $80 million in the US. Prince won a total of seven Grammy Awards of his career.
He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2004.
