Stan Herd’s portrait of John Lewis: ‘Lending art to causes … that have changed the world’

Kansas-born artist Stan Herd unveiled the “Earthwork” of the late congressman  and Civil Rights icon John Lewis Monday in Atlanta.

Lewis was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He fulfilled many key roles in the civil rights movement and its actions to end legalized racial segregation in the United States.  He also led the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. As a result the incident which became known as Bloody Sunday

, state troopers and police attacked the marchers

Herd only used only natural materials to fashion the portrait.  Herd says he used natural grass clipping devices to carve the lines of Lewis’ face and other materials to add texture and color.

Renowned for creating images using large areas of land. His various projects, have been included in major publications Smithsonian magazine and National Geographic’s World magazine.

In August of last year Herd created an earthwork portrait of than Democratic nominee for vice president, California Sen. Kamala Harris.
